Welcome to the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore BioBlitz, May 15-16, 2009!

This is the official advance registration site for Logistics Volunteers who wish to participate in the National Geographic and National Park Service 2009 BioBlitz at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.

If you would like to volunteer to help us with on-the-ground event logistics, please complete this registration. If you would like to participate in a scientist-led species inventory in the field, please register for an inventory team using the link on the main BioBlitz website at www.nationalgeographic.com/bioblitz

Scientists and K-12 teachers who have already registered (as well as the students of those teachers) do no not need to register again.

Volunteering to help support the BioBlitz

The BioBlitz is a 24-hour event from Friday, May 15 to Saturday, May 16, noon to noon, when teams of scientists, naturalists, community leaders, students and the public will join forces to discover and inventory every living plant and creature in one of the nation’s most biologically diverse national parks.

Following the species count will be the Celebrate Biodiversity festival on May 16, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., with music, talks, displays, and opportunities to explore more of the park, talk with the scientists and see them in action. With this year’s theme “Every Species Counts — Especially You,” a major focus will be on sustainability and what everyone can do to protect the park and the environment in general.

We rely on Logistics Volunteers to help make the BioBlitz and the Celebrate Biodiversity festival a great success. There are eight primary areas of responsibility that Logistics Volunteers may be asked to assume during the BioBlitz: Registration & Information, Support for Scientists & Exhibitors, Scientific Data Entry, Support for VIPs & Staff, Music & Events Stage, Support for School Groups, Parking, Anywhere You Need Me. We request that each Logistics Volunteer sign up for at least one of our designated 4-hour shifts.

The 2009 BioBlitz has six field stations that need the support of Logistics Volunteers. West Beach will serve as “Base Camp” for both the BioBlitz and the festival, thus the greatest need for Logistics Volunteer coverage will be at West Beach. However, we also need volunteers to support the satellite field stations: The Paul H. Douglas Center for Environmental Education, Chellberg Farm, Indiana Dunes State Park, Ly-co-ki-we Trail and Mt. Baldy.

If you are planning to take the train and shuttle bus service to the 'Blitz, please only volunteer to help at West Beach. (Much as we'd welcome your help anywhere, the shuttles will not stop at other field stations around the park!)

The following links provide information useful for completing the Logistics Volunteer registration and planning your involvement in the 2009 BioBlitz. We recommend studying them before completing your registration:

  1. Preparation for Logistics Volunteer Registration   [pdf]
  2. Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore Map
  3. National Park Service Volunteer Agreement (pdf)
  4. National Geographic Photo Release and Waiver (pdf)

The Logistics Volunteer registration is organized into two parts:

Once you submit your information, you may log back on at any time and make changes until registration closes the morning of Friday, May 8th.
