Welcome to the public registration website for the Indiana Dunes BioBlitz, May 15-16, 2009.

At the BioBlitz, you can join scientist-led teams in the field to find and identify the species that live in the park, try out field collection techniques and learn what life as a field biologist is like, peer through microscopes and sort through specimens, learn about biodiversity-themed organizations, go on a family hike with a naturalist, enjoy music and food, and even help us run the event.

Our base camp is at West Beach and will include scientists’ workstations, public presentations, booths for organizations, hands-on science investigations, a food vendor, entertainment, and on-site registration. Other field stations include Douglas Center/Miller Woods, Bailly/Chellberg/Little Calument River, State Park/Dunes Creek, Ly-co-ki-we Trail and Mt. Baldy, though there will be little more than a table and tent at each of those sites. Go to  the BioBlitz homepage at nationalgeographic.com/bioblitz for maps, directions, and other information.

If you wish to participate in a species inventory team or assist us with running the event, you should register in advance through this Web site. In-person registration will be available at the BioBlitz for late-comers, but the only way to guarantee a spot on a species inventory team is by registering here. We also recommend that you register here even if you plan on staying at Base Camp without joining any inventory teams. Online registration closes the morning of Friday, May 8th.

Scientists and K-12 teachers who have already registered do no not need to register again.

This is a two-part registration: In Part I you will enter your contact information. In Part II, you will be able to sign up for scientist-led species inventory teams.

Important Points:

1. In general, inventory teams are not appropriate for children under 8 years of age, and all minors (under 18) must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Some teams have a higher age limit, and this will be noted on the registration form. There will be plenty of fun and educational activities for people of all ages at West Beach.

2. You may assign yourself and up to five (5) additional people to any given inventory team without listing the names of those additional people. Thus, you may register your family, Scouts, group members, etc.

3. All participants (or parents/guardians of minors) will be required to sign a photo release and liability waiver for the National Geographic Society and a Volunteer Agreement for the National Park Service. You may download and print these forms now. Otherwise, please allow time to complete and sign them at check-in.

4. If you sign up to join an inventory team, the team leader will contact you by email before the BioBlitz to confirm meeting time, specific location, and other details. You should assemble at the location stated on the registration form unless otherwise directed by your team leader.

5. Before selecting an inventory team, we highly recommend you review the Full Schedule or download it (PDF) before making your selections. If you are planning to take the train and shuttle bus service to the 'Blitz, please register only for teams that depart from our West Beach Base Camp. (The shuttles will not stop at other deployment spots around the park.) All team selections are final. If you have any questions, please email bioblitz@ngs.org

6. You may also sign up to help as a volunteer with event logistics

PLEASE NOTE: This is a one-session registration process tied to your email address. Once you submit your registration, you will not be able to log in with the same email address to make any changes. Please carefully consider your desired volunteer activities, species inventory teams, the size of your party, etc. before completing your registration.

This registration is now closed. Thank you.
